engraving city map of Leuven, 1612
- Description
A hand-coloured copper engraving of the city map of Leuven and the surrounding area. With two coats of arms (Brabant, Leuven) at the top and a beautiful cartouche at the bottom with the text "Lovanium Brabantiarum urbium caput unica Musaru ac prestantissimarum artium sedes optantissimum que domiciliu". This engraving of Leuven comes from one of the editions of Lodovico Guicciardini, known for his historiography of the Netherlands: "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, Antwerp", in 1581. This work was published 33 times within one century, in different languages. This print probably comes from the Dutch edition of Guicciardini: "Beschryvinghe van alle de Nederlanden", published in Amsterdam in 1612 by Willem Jansz. Blaeu.
